A Brief History About Mary Sumner Vocational Institute

Prior to the creation/inauguration of the Diocese of Awka (Anglican Communion) on 19th March, 1987. The only existing vocational school, owned and managed by the Old Diocese on the Niger was Dayspring Industrial Center, Onitsha. At the 3rd Awka Diocesan Women Conference held at St. James’ Anglican Church, Nanka in 1989, the need for a functional vocational center for girls within the Diocese was stressed/highlighted. Thus in October, 1990, the institute was founded with Lady J.U Anah as the founding Director.

It admitted 24 girls as pioneer students at their temporary site - St. Paul University College premises, Awka. The first graduation/convocation of the school was in 1994 with His Grace Most Revd.
