About Mary Sumner Vocational Institute

Prior to the creation/inauguration of the Diocese of Awka (Anglican Communion) on 19th March, 1987. The only existing vocational school, owned and managed by the Old Diocese on the Niger was Dayspring Industrial Center, Onitsha. At the 3rd Awka Diocesan Women Conference held at St. James’ Anglican Church, Nanka in 1989, the need for a functional vocational center for girls within the Diocese was stressed/highlighted. Thus in October, 1990, the institute was founded with Lady J.U Anah as the founding Director.

Training Programmes At Mary Sumner Vocational Institute

The school’s excellence has caught the attention of Anambra State government who now partners with the school in her training programmes. Many widows/indegent women have been trained by the school for the governor’s wife in her CAFÉ programme. Some where trained in hairdressing, beauty therapy, some in catering/interior/exterior decorations and beading/wire work. The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) also sends artisans to be trained in Mary Sumner Vocational Institute, Awka. These training programmes has made the Anambra State government to donate the following to the school: School bus, hairdryers, sewing machines etc. The arrival of the new Bishop in the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Alexander C. Ibezim Ph.D and his wife Mrs. Martha Chioma Ibezim (Mama Awka) brought a lot of new innovations that led to more spiritual and structural development of the school. The school now has a website www.marysumner.anpss.net. Admission forms could be filled online and examination results got by students with scratch cards.
